 A huge passion of mine is photography. Diving into this Zombie magazine concept has been a bit of a journey for me. I realised soon into it that as much as Zombies are fun, it didn’t leave room for me to really show off what I’m good at. Never mind, plenty more opportunity for that I hope. Anyway, here are some great photographers I’ve found in the last month.

Patrick Winfield

I’m a big fan of Winfield’s work. I’ve experimented with polaroids for over a year now, and this man is a genius, even down to his compositions. He really knows how to work colour and texture to create one whole piece. It’s almost like fine art by the time the finished product is ready.

A Complete Alphabet (Flickr)

I really enjoyed looking at this collection of photographs. It’s hard to say which is better, the art or the photography, but what matters is that these photos provide a great insight into graffiti and the beauty in portraying typography.

I’ve been following Lia’s work for about 4 years. I remember being about 16 and thinking how awesome she is. I still do! Her art is wide across the board, but primarily photography and, brilliantly, Polaroid photography. In fact, it’s probably Lia that inspired me to get my first Polaroid camera. Her site is beautiful, simplistic in style and has that ethereal quality of the time before sleep and waking. It’s like being in a dream.

 Creating my own website has really made me appreciate the artistic quality in others’. Since creating my own, I’ve found some ingenious examples of what flash, html and a bit of creativity can do for you.

Conclave Obscurum

You know when you see a website and want to marry it? No? Never get this? Okay, well let’s put it this way. I’d never be divorcing this little beauty. Okay, so it’s a bit creepy. The background music does make me want to reach for the pillow and check Silent Hill hasn’t crept into the neighbourhood. But underneath it all is a raw quality that I love.

From what I understand, (and that’s saying something with the higgilty piggiltyness of the site,) it’s actually a musician’s website. But hey, I’m just here to appreciate the beauty.

My Chemical Romance

Okay, so I may be a bit biased here, but I am really enjoying this band at the moment and it thrilled me that they had a beautiful website. For the last couple of days it had flatlined (quite literally! The website had a heart monitor on it and nothing else,) but it’s resurrected again. It provides a lovely look at flash and html working hand in hand with each other.

Cedarseed

I’m not sure I actually like this site. I’m only sure that it’s a great use of layout and html coding. I like sites that have intricacy and “easter eggs” as it were. I think this site could be made more than what it is, but is still a beautiful representation of what can be done with a bit of creative thinking.

Neomu

I love this site! It’s a bit of fun and thats what makes it so charming. Don’t forget to look beyond the immensely pleasurable dandelions   There’s some great work beyond the blowing.

So it’s been a bit quiet over Christmas, mainly because I really don’t live up to my gender and I can’t multitask. But at least the magazine is (almost!) finished. Ish. And the flash is as finished as it’s ever going to be. Whilst I’ve been enjoying the holidays let me show you what I’ve been up to.

My website! It’s finally in action, though a lot more work needs to be done before it’s anything like the plans. At least I’ve got some stuff up. The main title image is the only one not by me, but I’m so in love with it I felt it had to be used. It’s from the children’s book “John and Jane” and if you can ever get any of these books, do, because they’re a great resource for graphic illustration circa 1950’s if you like that. Anyway;

So that’s that. Back to the magazine.

TypeNavigator is a handy little tool that allows you to choose the aspects of fonts which you like. It will then find the font to your description. Brilliant help when you’ve reached the end of your tether as I have been doing a lot at the moment!

For Webdesigners is  a great resource for… well… webdesigners. It hosts those things that you need to have quick reference to, and is a beautifully designed website in it’s own right.

Vance Wellenstein ,apart from having the best name ever, has a site for inspiration. Great for the magazine project, his work includes everything, even catalogues. Worth a look.

Mike Perry is my man at the moment. I absolutely love him. His illustration, his type, everything. And his book is called Hand Job, which believe me has started up a few conversations. I know what I’m asking for for Christmas.

And finally. I really believe that all work should be done with as much of you in it as possible but Vector Magic makes for a serious question of beliefs. It really works! (Notice how Vince Noir is the first thing I choose to vectorise!)

Also, I’ve been doing a bit of website work myself. I’ve recently finished a design involving the lovely Captain Jack from Torchwood for a friend.

Not really much to do with Graphics, but I think it’ll amuse everyone.

I’m studying line drawings at the moment for a insight into how people go about doing them and this website is a brilliant example of comedic illustration with a graphical feel. Yey!
